Western Kenya gears up for Magical Kenya Mountain Run

The Western Tourism Circuit is set for a major boost as the second edition of the Magical Kenya Mountain Run & Trail Series heads to the region in April 2025.
Under the
"Sports for Tourism" campaign, the event will leverage sports like
hiking, cycling, and mountain running to promote tourism while showcasing
Kenya’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Preparations are
in top gear, with Kakamega Forest undergoing upgrades, including a 13-kilometre
road improvement and a 34-kilometer fencing project. Key stakeholders,
including Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Roads Board, and Rhino Ark, are
working to sustain the forest ecosystem.
Kenya Tourism
Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei emphasized that this edition aims to spotlight
nature and adventure tourism across Kakamega, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Nyamira
counties. The event, set to culminate in Nyamira on May 4, will feature
activities designed to attract eco-tourists and adventure seekers.
Homa Bay’s Ruma
National Park, home to Kenya’s last remaining roan antelope and a large
population of Rothschild giraffes, will be a key attraction. Meanwhile, Siaya’s
Utonga Nature Conservancy will highlight conservation efforts in the Lake
Victoria Basin.
Utonga
Conservancy Executive Director William Omamo Jr. praised the initiative, saying
it aligns with modern tourism trends emphasizing sustainability, adventure, and
cultural heritage.
Following the
success of the inaugural edition in Laikipia, Nakuru, and other Rift Valley
counties, this series aims to position Western Kenya as the next frontier for
eco-tourism and adventure travel.
